Essex: Firefighters: We've finally got it licked
FIREFIGHTERS were today finally getting the massive oil depot blaze under control.
"There's real optimism the fire will be extinguished today," Hertfordshire Police assistant chief constable Robert Beckley said.
Essex firemen are among those who have been battling the blaze at Buncefield, near Hemel Hempstead, since Sunday.
Billericay station officer Sean Norris said: "The devastation is unbelievable. Buildings have been ripped apart and cars have been thrown into trees."
Hemel MP Mike Penning - well-known in Southend political circles as a fomer aide to Sir Teddy Taylor - called for a public inquiry into why homes had been allowed to be built so close to the depot. Mr Penning, a former Hadleigh fireman, said: "This is a national disaster."
